with that said let's go back to the video the first thing i recommend you doing is to define your short and long the first thing you should do is to define your longer and short-term goals and what do i mean by then so essentially with long-term goals you should try to find a career path that you love is profitable it gives you purpose and how can you do that so you have to think about your values and aspirations and to give you a practical example um maybe you are into environment so you want to work for specific companies that are doing something good for the environment another way to see this is to think about what type of impact you want to have like do you want to work for a big tech company where you can have a small impact on the life of millions of people or would you much rather working at a startup where you can design the whole product which is going to have a huge impact on less people maybe like a thousand people so this is another way to define your values also think about the community aspect like do you want to work for a company that is local to you or it is global there are different ways um to think about your values and inspirations and i invite you to just list them out and see and see what else you can come up with another thing you should be doing when defining your long-term goals is to think about how this profession will evolve in the future and i'm talking about the next five to ten plus years like are you still gonna be in two ways or would you much rather slowly transitioning into something else just consider how your job could uh potentially evolve because we can't predict the future but we already know that there will be technologies like ai or vr which will play an important role in our day-to-day job um so yeah just think about how you see yourself what you see yourself doing in the next many years but don't forget that long-term goals are not one of these things that you define once and then you cannot change again just you're gonna be flexible here like you want to revisit them once in a while they're gonna change at least mine changed a hundred times and they keep changing then you can finally start thinking about your short-term goals so what is your plan for the next three to six months like um you can think about taking a course creating one case study and apply for an internship and you can break them down into even smaller chunks like you want to create one specific case study uh based on a personal project in a week or you want to take a course in a couple of months and this course will involve different steps and i'm a big fan of short-term goals because i like something that is small actionable and gives me reward straight away and all your small goals like creating a case study creating a portfolio and land a job opportunity will lead you to your long-term goals like becoming a senior product designer ux manager or things like that the second step you need to take is to self-evaluate your skills so think about your strengths and weaknesses and here you have to be really honest and realistic about what your potential and limitations are you know we all come from different backgrounds and we have a different skill set um so here is important to just like be realistic with where you're at like to give you a practical example my background is in visual and graphic design so my strengths were more leaning toward the ui and less about ux the one listed on the screen are the main ones for product designers and here you can score yourself one to five for each skill and this exercise can help you visualize and gain a clear picture of your strengths your superpowers but also those areas where you want to improve and this is something that we do automatically but having a framework can give you direction and guidance next you will need to choose a learning method based on your learning style and obviously your budget by the way all the things i'm about to tell you are also listed in a google doc that you can download down below so that you don't need to scribble notes or take screenshots throughout the video you can just enjoy it grab yourself a coffee and let's go the most common option is to learn through courses and when it comes to courses i think here the choice is very personal and it really depends on your level and how much time and budget you have available generally speaking someone with experience in a similar field like a graphic design doesn't need such a deep level of knowledge and i'm not saying graphic and product design are the same thing but they definitely have a lot in common like design thinking and visual design but sometimes our current job doesn't have anything in common with product design so in that case you might be better off taking a course and not only because it makes you more countable because you know you're putting a lot of time money and effort into the course but also because it can save you tons of in this video we're going to go over the differences between ux and ui this is a very important lesson here because i want to give you a real foundational understanding of what ux is how it works how it functions the different factors within ux and be able to contrast that with ui so you can get a full scope of what ui is what ux is and be able to understand what are the different elements components and factors that each one of these is comprised of so let's go ahead and jump into the ux design ux design involves interactions between a potential or active customer and a company it relies on visual design behavioral psychology and consumer research now one of the biggest things here you want to keep in mind is the behavioral psychology and consumer research that's what you're also learning in this course which is very much so important to your ux and ui career if you don't really understand behavioral psychology influence triggers persuasion being able to understand what makes humans tick and what actually gets them to make a decision and how to evoke certain emotions then you're really going to have a hard time with the user design and user experience okay so that's going to be a big element for the ux and then the user experience part refers to the interaction between the user and the product or service so how the user is interacting with that particular product that website it's essentially considering all the different elements and how they interact with each other to shape this experience okay so this is what the user experience is it's any type of experience that a user is going through to interact with the business the business website the application whatever that may be that's what you really want to take away from the user experience so user interface this is the actual design and look and feel of the presentation or the interactivity of a product right think about a web application a software as a service application that somebody uses on their phone to actually maybe play a game or to be able to build a product or whatever that may be right every type of ui is going to have a unique interface that is able to have the individual the customer the end user be able to use the software the actual application the website and be able to use that product and have a pleasurable experience using it right and then we have the user interface is the point of interaction between the user and a digital device or products right so think about like a touch screen on your smartphone think about facebook i'm sure you have facebook on your phone think about how that user interface is set up where they make it so that you are constantly on your phone you're checking your news feed you're looking at what other people are talking about right so that's essentially the user interface of an application and they design it in a way to get you to always want to go and be on the application right and with websites and different applications ui design considers the look and feel and the interactivity of the product and so ultimately with the ui design always think about it from the perspective this is the interface that i'm actually interacting with this is what i'm seeing this is how i'm actually you know using this platform how i'm using let's say linkedin or facebook or any of these other type of websites or applications right it's how you're interacting with them and that's what you really want to understand and know about as far as the user interface ui design okay so that's going to be here for this one and we'll see you on the next one in this video we're going to go over the ux ui designer marketplace so this is going to give you an introductory into the marketplace as a starting salary what are some of the things that recruiters are looking for and some of the challenges that recruiters are actually facing to be able to find top ux ui design talent and because you're taking this course and you're going through this program you're going to be somebody that actually is able to fill those positions because you're going to get the necessary and required training that is going to be expected of for a ux and ui designer so let's go ahead and jump into the ux ui designer marketplace and how much growth potential this actually has here so one of the first things to note here is that linkedin cited ux design as one of the top skills to learn in 2020 and beyond and it makes sense right because you think about different businesses looking to make more of an impact online and looking to find out more ways that they can engage their users they can provide a better customer journey customer experience and be able to provide them with an amazing experience with the brand with the company with the employees right and so the ux design marketplace has been exploding and will continue to have significant amount of growth from now and beyond so recruiters are often struggling to fill ux roles because of the knowledge gap now just like i mentioned you going through this course you're going through this program you're going to have those necessary skills that understanding of what is required of a ux ui designer and so you're going to be able to fill these roles very easily especially since you are learning a lot more other than the ux and ui traditional information and knowledge right because the traditional ux ui that's going to be more around the obviously user experience graphic design and many other areas however where this really gets into a difference maker is the behavioral psychology the understanding of influence persuasion and really understanding human psychology as a whole so that products can be created that are actually being able to be taken action on by the individuals because you understand how they actually operate what drives decision making how actually emotion is the biggest factor when individuals make decisions and they tend to justify logically so understanding not only the ux ui roles and having that skill set but also understanding the influence and persuasion is going to go a long way and so the average salary for a ux and ui designer and i believe this is in the u.s so about 85 000 a year you can see here it's a pretty decent amount of salary because you're doing so much for the business right you have tremendous value you're responsible for providing the actual experience that the customer the end user is having with that end product and so this is a very important position and if you ask most people that are in the ux ui field they'll tell you that it's a meaningful career because they have real genuine interest and curiosity into the work that they actually do every single day because remember the ux professionals are oftentimes very much so interested in how people operate how does a human mind work how does a human psyche work what drives us to actually take action to make certain decisions and so what they all have in common here is that they're motivated to understand their users and to improve the overall experience right and that all goes into the behavioral psychology so ultimately the ux and ui designer marketplace is massiv
