purge unused many Sketchup models have unused components in them like the 2d people in the Sketchup templates these get erased but oftentimes never purged so they leave behind unused components layers and materials this trail of junk is true for any component that is no longer used in a model when you delete the component from the model it still exists in the file in case you want to use it later purge the unused item from the component browser to remove it completely and yet the materials that the component use still remain although no longer referenced in the model as indicated by the missing white triangles here on the material swatches the materials remain in case you want to use them later to get rid of the unreferenced materials purge unused from the materials browser the layers that the component used still remain for similar reasons just purge unused from the details flyout to clean them out of the file these issues can be easily solved in one step by going to window model info statistics purge unused it recursively purges on referenced components layer styles and materials from the model all in one go you can delete components and materials individually directly from their browsers right-click on a swatch and just select delete and it will replace it with the default material remember your users all your components structure colors and layers follow a component into a user's model and can clutter up their model if you're not careful if they change their mind and erase the component all the items remain there is a particular issue with dynamic components that assign colors only one color is used by any part at any given time but we don't want to lose the other color options by the use of the purged unused you will need to embed the materials and colors individually within the code of the dynamic component or on an entity or by using color swatches the color can be written into the dynamic component as an RGB value here you see there are four colors in which case it will always display properly even if that color is purged from the model if you use named colors and they're not standard names known to Sketchup you'll need to store them another way a simple way to do this is to paint the various colors in your palette onto edges within the component since the edges are part and parcel of the component they will never be deleted and hence the color they're painted with won't either this is generally not a problem since almost all models are displayed with the edges being set to one solid color and users will not see the rainbow effect
Thanks uluklaiG your participation is very much appreciated
