to be a complete architect you need to have only three categories of software in your toolset every time i hear a new program come out with a new version that each architect must use i start panicking and wonder what do i need to learn now so let me show you what programs you will need and why on three different levels so the first category is modeling you need a program to translate your ideas into something buildable floor plans details schedules 3d models sections site plans etc look i'm not going to lie to you you need to learn vape software archicad revit vectorworks go ahead and choose if you are just starting out take a look at some places you would like to work in the future and look at what software requirements do they have i would first base my decision on that second choose the one that adjusts better to your pocket suppose you are working as an independent architect and in that case you need something that will not break the bank understand that each country region office studio and university has its own software culture so you can know revit its entirety but you can also go to work at an old school office that works in autocad but you just have to make sure you learn bim software the second category is visualization suppose we are talking about a solid base for being an architect who can design draw and communicate effectively in that case you need a visualization tool that will get you from a 3d model to a decent visualization for this i recommend a starter plugin like enscape it's straightforward to use and learn it's plugged right into your bim software and you can get pretty cool results if used well if you are looking for a free version you can also use twin motion or d5 render the third category is presentation you need a tool that will help you present the drawings effectively and renders you have created this can be something like adobe indesign but many architects can create introductory presentations also with photoshop illustrator or even powerpoint this is the basic tool set you need to start don't overwhelm yourself in panic just learn this if i were put as a recent graduate and had to learn three programs these would be it now having that said knowing just three programs is not necessarily going to give you an edge amongst your colleagues and you probably won't stand out much in job selections so can you get better than this of course intermediate level for our first category modeling you need a program where you can polish your 3d model and make it ready for visualization again you will have to choose depending on where you are where you want to work and your budget some options are 3d max rhino sketchup or blender in some cases these programs can even be helpful in the concept phase of a project where you are coming up with ideas that you will later pass on to your bim software so having the ability to model fast and sometimes complex forms and programs that aren't as rigid as big programs can be an advantage for our second category visualization you need programs where you have more space to personalize add assets and create complex visualizations with the model you have made i would suggest starting with lumion d5 render or moving on to render engines like v-ray when you begin by learning v-ray and all of its complex variables you won't have such a hard time understanding it when you move on to a real-time rendering engine different than if you start the other way around for our third category presentation i would have at least three different programs on which you should have an intermediate level photoshop illustrator and indesign photoshop will help you perfect your visualizations or create collage renderings illustrator will help you improve your line work like floor plans and sections and indesign will help you craft presentation boards portfolios and booklets to make you stand out now how does your tool set look with an intermediate level you can switch from one software like revit to another like archicad you can create a decent render in v-ray or lumion and you can polish drawings present them with adobe software but can you get better than this well of course for our first category modeling i would suggest adding plugins to make you more productive and allow you model complex forms or model with data depending on your base modeling software you'll need specific plugins some examples are learning grasshopper for rhino learning to use railclone or forest pack for 3d max dynamo for revit kirby loft or quad face tools for sketchup next is visualization here you should get deep into a complex visualization tool and know the ins and outs understand how to troubleshoot common problems and understanding how to create complex materials from scratch preferably pbr materials will add realism to your visualization and having a sense of composition will make your images visually attractive third presentation you will probably add some programs that can help you present in different ways learning software like premiere pro in after effects will help you communicate your architectural ideas through video form which in today's world is always necessary so now you look like an architect that can receive almost any task and know how to deal with it but can you get better than this of course now you know what software you understand better which is more suited for the type of projects you are working on and probably you have understood that you don't need plugins as you thought perhaps you can become an expert in for example archicad if you are ultra productive understand easily and can quickly create a project you don't need anything else second rendering master composition color light and storytelling yes that's right i didn't say v-ray lumion enscape but just composition color light and storytelling you can use enscape or v-ray or you can have a shitty laptop or the latest graphics card but by knowing this you are on another level learn how to construct a persuasive presentation your goal is to convey ideas to an audience you must make your argument visually and your task is to be straightforward so now the so there's no better way to start the earth than with new exciting goals right and if you're in the architecture world there's always that new softer in your lease that you want to master so in today's video let's talk about what software you have to have in a resume in 2020 hey guys oliver here with a new video I hope you guys are doing great if you're new here I post weekly videos all about architecture especially visualization and representation but every so often about extra topics like this one 20/20 has tons of new content planned so consider subscribing alright first of all there isn't a magical single software that is going to fulfill all your architecture needs the best architect has a handful of skills to tackle each problem with these now each software has unique features that can help you achieve better and faster results so let's talk about these software's in groups then all you're gonna do is pick one of each group and you will be covered in all aspects okay you guys will probably know a couple of them but since I've had lots of requests about what software I use and why I'm going to also give my opinion on each one and in the end you can see precisely what workflow I use cool the forest and for most important group is obviously BIM it's the main tool for architects no doubt today it is a must in your skill set a couple of years back some would say that this would be a plus in a resume but it isn't anymore it's a complete necessity so if it's still of today you don't know a BIM software it has to be your priority for sure they're basically three main software's that I can highlight here archicad which is very intuitive to use you can go pretty easy from a basic mess into a very detailed 3d model with all the documentation info in there it is made specifically for architects than Revit which is the most used worldwide it has the best connections with other projects such as structural map and so on and there's one I like to always remember but usually doesn't have that much attention vector works from all three it has the best tools to create the 2d draw from 3d although I find the 3d modeling part a bit confusing well that's a very short and shallow comparison but don't just make this choice based on the most used software worldwide thinking you just get a job easier or just based on this list I've used all of them and for me personally Revit is too square maybe because I was never really an AutoCAD user and rabbit has a bit of that workflow and also I feel that the software focus is more towards the civil engineering world then looking more into ArchiCAD I saw that some big companies also decided to use it I found it very easy to use to visualize and design exactly what I wanted the learning curve isn't as steep as Revit and Leslie I found it very similar to sketch ups workflow with a pushing pool system so from my experience learning how a BIM Softworks is more important than really mastering one of them it is much easier to migrate from one to another once you understand how BIM works the main idea of this video is to present you with options so you can search more info to make a well-thought decision I'm going to leave a couple of useful links in the description although to these software's aren't as needed as BIM they are a complement to your main architectural workflow this is also where you create preliminary to the concepts of Zoning usually rabbet users will use AutoCAD to refine details that weren't exported as planned rabbit also has the tools to draw 2d in it ArchiCAD also has strong tools to help you create patterns lines and everything made in 2d well it might be wondering what would I need to draw 2d if you set that beam is already what's being used out there well there are certain areas that in my experience still take great value out of quick and precise 2d drawings one of which is interior design documenting furniture and creating specific woodwork details that will go to your local carpenter and jointer it still makes more sense to do it this way a BIM software requires so much more modeling to extract plans and sections that a 2d approach can get it done in no time so AutoCAD is obviously an option but for me the winner if you're planning to go strictly to the is Vectorworks here you work with planes instead of lines and fields and this is what's best for me in the software it has a similar workflow to Adobe Illustrator with shapes for example I used on all architecture offices I worked and during university before software next let's talk about 3d BIM software is incredible document and generate construction info and details but when it comes to visualization for now at least simply forget it yeah it has render engines built-in but to be honest it sucks now there are two types of workflow you can use I use them both depending on the situation you can decide your model everything in a beam software but this usually requires much more detailing than needed for visualization for example in preliminary studies when you are selling your idea it doesn't really matter what type of framing connection your windows who have or the exact slab thickness you need you were actually designing the space and creating the architecture itself of course you have to have it in your head but in a broader sense so it might be interesting to choose a 3d software that help
