what's up guys and welcome back to another Revit tools video in this video we'll be covering the create a group tool or just working with model groups and read it so you can find the group tool up here in the modify tab you could also place a group through model group here there's place a group and create a group again and then you can load as a group into open projects we'll get into all this later in the video something that I do want to point out at the beginning of the video that this is gonna be part one of groups it's gonna be the basics what is a group why do you what happens has a function and then when you might want to use groups I am NOT a huge advocate of groups because of how they interact with other elements in Revit it's it can be kind of dicey it's not something I always try to use on the other hand if you're familiar with other programs such as Sketchup model grouping and everything is so important and vital to effectively model in Sketchup or other programs like that Revit is different while you can do the same thing with model groups I don't necessarily recommend it in this video part 1 we're covering the basics let's get right into it so what I can do I can't make a group out of nothing so I have to start with some model elements so for that I'll just start with some walls make a couple walls here I'll zoom in just like that we've got some walls what I can do at this point is I can select all the elements and I can create group I'm then prompted to name the group so I will just name this wall group and I can choose to open this in the editor or not I'll go ahead and do that but I don't necessarily always do that so when you're in the group editor you have the option to add other elements or remove them if you would like to when you do that just notice that that will take into account everything that you have in the group you finish and then that will be populated across all the groups okay so now I have this group you can you can select it you can see its model group it's called wall group its associated level one in this case and you can see there's an origin right there most the time you won't need to change that or affect that but by default it is the center or like kind of the centroid of all the elements that you have what I can do now is I can go to model group in the architecture tab I can place group and now I'll have an option of choose all the groups in my project and just place them right now I only have one group in this project which is the one I just made and now I can begin placing it wherever I want and however I want and I have the same group in these six different places not necessarily something I might do but as an example the basics of modeling with groups this is this is what you get when I select one of those groups I have the option up here to edit in the group just like we were in before I can edit this group but I can also choose to ungroup it so for this one example maybe I want to ungroup this and I want to make this completely separate from all these groups I can hit ungroup and it just in this case is every wall I have all these walls they're independent they're not associated these groups at all I can freely move these and do whatever I want with them independently from all the groups its disassociated it has been ungrouped just like before I can instead of copy or instead of placing I can even choose the copy so I can copy these groups around just like before I can actually rotate them do anything I want with them at this point and now like I said before you can go to edit group and maybe I want to add elements to this maybe I want to add some doors I've got a door all plates there there and there and as soon as I finish you can see that doors populate throughout all the groups I have placed very simple this is a great reason why you would want to use groups this is the whole advantage of using groups because it's uniform throughout all the groups placed in the project you know you're only added in one place a lot of times what I do is if I'm in 3d for example I've got all these groups and I know I just need to edit one I'll probably end up just selecting one and isolating that in view but the sunglasses down here isolating the element and now I can easily work with this entire group very easily and make the edits that I need to in the group editor so I can then have that populated throughout the project as soon as I click finish go back down and reset the temporary and you can see all those walls and the groups are now angled it's kind of the basics of what groups are now where you might use them that's kind of up in the air you can use them for anything and everything you can use them even for an entire floor plate of walls and furniture and everything and copying them up the building you can do that a lot of times what I do is I'll take an entire floor and if it's gonna be copied up to multiple floors I will make it a group I'll copy it up and then I will immediately ungroup it just so everything is there in place and again you could also you could do that by going through the different copy and paste options so I can control see and then go to paste in the modify tab and I could align to selected levels in this case I get select level 2 and I can get the same model group showing up on level 2 you can do the same thing like that and then you can ungroup that level there and so you've got all these different things associated on level 2 but that's not part of the group again there's a hundred different ways you could use groups the problem with groups that I have is that they very easily break and it's hard to explain why or what but a lot of times model groups break and it's dependent on a host or joins so let's see if I can quickly throw an example together if I go back to level one I'm gonna get rid of all of these groups and I'm gonna make some walls making walls here very simple like this and what I'll do now is I'll make it to where these walls just go up to level one yes I feel hopeful too of course and from there maybe I want to make some walls here make so make room there another room there and split it right there now go ahead and throw some doors in there door or door and then a door right there why not what I want to do maybe is make a group out of all of these interior walls that makes sense right because of course what you might want to do is use the this configuration in other places maybe you have this same configuration of walls somewhere else maybe you've got it right over here and you want to use this interior configuration of walls over there it makes perfect sense that you would want to do this exact thing is use groups so I'm gonna select all these elements I will create a group I'll name this just example and what I can do now is place this group so I'll go back to model group and place group and now I've got this same group up here to choose from I've got that first wall group that I made a now example and what I can do is place this really anywhere I want but I want I want it constrained in these walls and at this this point that's where the origin can co

what's going on guys balkan arctic here and in today's tutorial i'm going to be talking about modeling components in place so components in Revit you can load them in as just separate families or you can model them in place and I see a lot of confusion over here people using in-place components for things that shouldn't be done as in planes components and then there they have a lot of trouble later on where when they have to use it in other projects or in other cases they use regular families instead of in-place components and then it takes a lot of time to model those and it's it's really hard and it takes well it takes too much time and it's a really big headache so I wanted to create a tutorial just to explain how in place components work want to use them why not use them what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using those and how to create some in-place components so that's what this tutorial is going to be all about now the project that I'm going to be using for just demonstration purposes is one that I've created in my simple house in Revit course it's a five hour course and it's available on my patreon first link in the description of this video and there I have a lot of a more content on some advanced Revit topics so if you're interested check it out also you can find all of my Revit project files as well as one-on-one tutoring if that's something you need okay so with that out of the way let's get straight into the tutorial let's first start off by explaining the components tool so the component tool is located here on the architecture tab on the build panel and the component tool basically allows you to insert any families that are not your regular system families in Rabbid so these are component families system families are the ones like the walls and the ceilings and the floors and the curtain systems things like that the stairs those are system families and they can only be assembled and created within your project now the component families are all of the component families that are here in the inside of the component option and all so we have the doors and windows that also are component families but they have their own dedicated buttons and shortcuts now components are usually reserved for furniture plumbing fixtures things like that that you use within your model and maybe site components elements like that now for placing these we have the option to place a component and then we have the model in place options we're going to be talking about within this tutorial now let's first go over the place the component options so basically it's like there here we have all of the families that are loaded in all of the I component families so here as you can see we have all of those and then you can just select one of those like this desk and then you can just place it within the model now these families are separate files so if you go here into edit the family you're going to see that this is a separate the file and I'll let me just close this off and if you you can just copy this around you can load it into different projects you can just play around with that and if you decide to go into edit family and make some changes to this family usually the rest of these families will follow that change so basically the change will be applied to each instance of that family depending of course on the change and/or if it's maybe a just a change of the instance parameter than only one of these will change but anyways let's delete this so when do you use a component and when do you use a model in place well if you want to use some component like furniture so let's go here in the floor plan here we have a simple chair so this is a sofa chair this is something that you can reuse in future projects you can create a family like this and then just use it in one project after the other and it's something that can be reused a lot of the time it's a simple stand-alone family so this is something that should be modeled as a family and then loaded into the project and placed as a component now modeling in place is reserved for elements that are project specific so any additional GM tree that's going to be specific to that project should be modeled in place just because it's not something that you will be able to transfer over to other projects so it makes sense to model it just in the inside of that project also a second reason for modeling in place is the fact that you can use the project geometry like your walls your roofs your floors things like that as reference so for example if you want to create something maybe you want to have some sort of a Sun cover maybe some Sun Shade for example in this area it's really easy to use that model in place options so for example I'm just going to go here the component model in place and then here at first we have to categorize this so let's say this is a generic model now that's the most generic a way that you can categorize this but of course we have many more options now I'm going to talk about the impact of this categorization a bit later on but for now let's just create a simple family like this just a simple generic model click OK now here I suggest you name it correctly doesn't leave it as a generic model let's call this one Sun Shade and then click enter there we go now we can use the rest of this model as reference so I'm just going to go here to set workplane then go with the pickup line option and then pick this wall here just like that and then I can create extrusions along that wall so I can go here maybe like that maybe go with a rectangle create a simple extrusion like this maybe then copy it so let's copy to maybe once like that and then go to copy with the multiple option let me try that again so copy select this endpoint as reference so where we grabbed it there and like this I can copy it multiple times maybe like this so we just copy it alongside this wall and when I to finish I can extend it and I can just make sure that I extend it all the way to the other wall so when we do something like this okay I guess we want a bit too far so as you can see now it's kind of hosted on that face of the wall so it's perfectly fitting in this spot here on this project now usually you're not going to get ace project with a similar opening like this so this is something that's really specific to this project now we can just go ahead and change the material maybe do some wood material for this let's type in wood may be birch and just hit the finish model and there we go we have our in-place element so there we go works perfect now also you will you would use these in place families if you want to edit some of the existing families or make some changes that can be done using these in place components so for example we have this wall over here now we can add some sweeps to those or reveals to that wall if we want to edit it so for example here on architecture under a wall we have a wall reveal so we can do something like that and as you can see it makes a horizontal opening but it's very uniform and it's fairly simple you can change the profile a little bit but it's usually either horizontal
