hey there I'm Kevin Kennedy a product designer that helps hobbyist learn fusion 360 this free mini course is for absolute beginners with no previous experience required by the end of this tutorial you'll have created your very own customizable and 3d printable stamps with an interchangeable stamp plate learning fusion 360 is a critical step in being able to create your very own unique designs that you can 3d print let's dive right in and get started before modeling anything I like to name the design file I'll click the Save icon in the upper left hand corner of the toolbar this opens up the save dialog box in which you can choose the name and location of the file I'm going to type out Kevin's custom stamp as the name for the location I'll hit the carrot icon which toggles open all of the location settings if you're brand-new to fusion 360 then you can create a new project by clicking the new project button I'll type out Kevin Kennedy's class for the project name then you'll notice that you can also create folders within each project folders are not required however they are simply a nice way to keep similar files organized in group together I'm going to make sure that Kevin Kennedy's class is selected and then I'll click the blue Save button to save the file now that I've successfully saved the design file you'll see that the file name is now located within the file tab we're now ready to start modeling by the end of this course you'll have created a custom stamp which is made up of two different parts the first part is the stamp plate which is interchangeable and the second part is the handle of the stamp which can be reused with any stamping plate as you create designs in fusion 360 you'll want to create a new component for each and every part that makes up your design for this design will create one part for the handle in one part for the reusable stamp plate to create a new component I'll select the assemble drop-down list in the toolbar then I'll select the new component option this opens up the new component dialog box we currently don't have anything in our file so we'll have to use the default empty component selection then we'll want to name our component so it's easier to find the component in our model I'll type out the word plate for the component name then I'll click the ok button now the reason we have to create a new component for each part is that the component will group all of the relevant two-dimensional sketches and other details of the part which you'll see later on in this course on the left hand side of your fusion 360 you'll see the fusion 360 browser the browser can be viewed as your file structure it will house all the different components or parts of your file as well as the origin planes and other objects that make up your part you'll see that our plate component is active as signified by this dot within the circle next to the component name we can now start creating a two-dimensional sketch which will then be able to turn into a three-dimensional object at its core our stamp play is simply a rectangle and because we want the stamp late to be interchangeable we're going to make it a sliding dovetail joint if you're not familiar a dovetail is a type of joint that is often used in woodworking well make the sides of our rectangle angled so it can slide in and out of the handle without falling out I'll activate the line command with the keyboard shortcut letter L as in Lima once activated you'll see that the three origin planes are highlighted in orange we'll have to select one of the origin planes to draw the sketch on these origin planes correspond to the viewcube which is the cube in the upper right hand corner you can click on the sides of the view cube to take a look at different sides of your model or you can also click and drag the view cube around to look at the model from all different angles I'm going to click on the front side of the viewcube then I'll click on the X Z origin plane I can now draw lines on this XZ plane to create the 2d sketch that represents the shape we want I'll first click on the center origin and I'll drag my mouse cursor to the right you'll then see a dimension input field opens up I'll type out 35 millimeters and then I'll click on that red horizontal line to set the line in place next I'll drag my mouse cursor up and you'll see that we can continue to draw lines as the line command is still active I'll type out 70 degrees for the angle input field and then I'll hit the tab key on my keyboard which locks the degrees into place for the length dimension field I'll type out five millimeters and I'll click on the left side making sure that the line is going back towards the origin point for the next line I'll create the angle line on the left side to do so I'll hit the Escape key on my keyboard which exits the line command then I'll simply right-click to select repeat line to quickly reselect it I'll select the origin point I'll type out five millimeters for the dimension followed by the tab key to lock the dimension in place and once again I'll type out 70 degrees for the degree input field followed by the tab key to lock the degree in place then I'll click to set the line in place lastly I'll click on the other line to connect all the lines together which creates a closed profile shape as signified by the orange background highlight the key takeaway here is that you'll need a closed profile or a fully connected geometric shape in order to use many of the modeling tools as you'll see in just a second the modeling tools allow you to turn two-dimensional sketches into three-dimensional shapes in this case we'll want to use the extrude command which lets us add depth or thickness to a closed profile shape I'll select the extrude command from the create drop-down list located in the solid tab once active I'll select the closed profile shape as the extrude profile I'll simply type out the dimension or length of this extrude I'll type out ninety millimeters in the distance input field and then I'll click the ok button to create the shape we now have successfully created our reusable stamp plate to customize the stamp plate we'll be using your design that should be an SVG vector file if you don't have an SVG file then you can use my sample file which can be downloaded at product design forward slash 1/6 that's product design forward slash 16 to insert the SVG i'll select the insert drop-down list in the toolbar then i'll select the insert SVG option once the insert SVG command is activated you'll need to select a plane on which the SVG design file will be placed of course in this scenario we want our design to be on the stamp plate so I'll select the top of the stamp plate immediately after selecting the top face of the stamp plate you'll notice the model was reoriented for our convenience fusion 360 automatically changes the view so we're looking directly at it making it easier to work with next I'll click on the folder icon located in the insert sd G dialogue box this opens up the folders on my computer's hard drive from here I'll select the product design onlin

fusion 360 is very powerful CAD software but with great power comes great responsibilities and it can seem a little overwhelming in the beginning and there is some best practices to get a good model in this basic video I will take you through those basic steps and I will model up apart from start to finish hi everybody my name is lars christensen and thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video this video is the video that I wish I have come across when I started using fusion 360 taking apart like this this is a plastic conduit might find a few of these around in your house and model it up from start to finish but not just click click and then be done we actually got to slow down a little bit and talk about some of the why we're doing certain things so if you are cabining yet this video is probably not for you but if you're brand new to fusion 360 or if you have a certain areas that kind of like confuses you a little bit well then sit tight lastly before we get started I love your comments and suggestions down in the comment area down there I know many people read them I can promise you that I read them all and if you like this video do me a favor and hit that thumbs up if you don't well if the thumbs down and if you haven't already I would really appreciate hit that subscribe button so let's get going here so the first thing you're going to make sure of is that we are in the model environment inside of fusion 360 this is like what we call parametric modeling second we also want to make sure that our units is correct now you can change the units in the Preferences up here in the drop down so they always default to whatever you want but you can also change it right here on the fly I think that's another important thing to know and we're going to do this in millimeters okay for that and now we are in millimeters so if you're looking at this conduit we can say that it has four parts that is kind of the box there's a lid and then there is two screws now if you're coming from another CAD system you might be used to that we would create each component and then merge them together later on assembly file we actually don't have to do that inside of fusion 360 we can do it all in one file it is good practice though that if you are going to do that to kind of like decide to do that up front so what we're going to do is you're going to create a component that's going to be the box we're going to create a components can be the lid and then we actually just going to bring in the screws from the McMaster catalog that resides right in of fusion 360 now before we start drawing anything we're going to go ahead and create those components here in the tree we're going to do that by just going up and right click and say new component now as soon as we do that then we will see we get a component here and the top component exit kind of like shows us an assembly icon now if you are looking for more information about components I would recommend that you watch the video there should be a card coming flying out here and I've also put it down in the description for the components video I created so if you really want to dig deep into that check that out so the first component here is going to be the box so we can click on that and we can actually rename that I'm just going to call it box and then I'm going to go up and create one more component up here by right-clicking and say new component and that one we're going to call the lid slow click it's going to call that the lid so what we have now is we have a master top component or assembly and then we have the two components right here now you will see that there's a little I looking at you next to the name that depends on what component that is active so whatever this fish is is activated on right now the lid if I go up and I activate it on the box now the Box component will be active and we're going to start out with the box here to model this pod up now what each component here we saw has in it is it has its own origin and I actually prefer to turn that on so I have made sure that my units are right I have my first component created here the box and I make sure that is active so when I start drawing now I'll make sure drawing within that component and I have also turned the origin on so I can kind of like see that because that's one of the things that is important when we start sketching inside of fusion is that we tie our sketches down to in origin it's kind of like mailing things in place in space so to start and the first energy on this part it's kind of like to rough out the outside perimeter of the box so when you start a sketch within fusion 360 a 2d sketch you always have to start on either a face or a plane we will create a 2d sketch that we then will extrude into 3d space now that scads gotta be either on a face or a plane that's a rule now in this case here we don't have a face because we haven't started a sketch it we don't have anything 3d in the model yet so we have to start on a plane so we have three planes we can pick from I'm going to select this plane but it's not really important but plane you select for this now you could go up and use the menus up here on top and there's a bunch of drop-down menus here but I really don't like hunting for these and I don't think that it makes any sense for you as a new user to start up in here in the drop-down and then later on learning all the things I think you might as well just learn the quickest way to start with so that is to go over here on the plane and right-click and if I right-click right here I can create the first sketch so I'm going to click on that and when I do that automatically the plane will Co normal to where we are sketching so that's why you saw everything spinning and you will get this menu over here that shows you our sketching constraints with the topping these in a little second you will also see that we are starting down here in the bottom to capture the history so this is one of the powers as she's going to see as we're modeling up this little box here is one of the powers is that we have this history now just to go back up to the menu up here if I hit the drop down you will see that we have different sketching tools and ear helpers so we have some different types of rectangles we have some different types of circles and so forth but like I said before I really don't like to have too hot in here that's excellent easy away now if you scroll down to the description area you will see the list of shortcuts that I'm going to be using in this video and you can write them down a piece of paper or something and put them next to your monitor honestly I don't think it makes sense to learn the software by hunting around and all the drop downs and then later on switching over to the shortcut there is really just a handful you need to learn and I will make sure that doing the whole video they will pop up every time I'm using them so I'm going to start by hitting the S key on my keyboard when I do that this little sketch tool box shows up and this will actually change depending on where what you're working with in the software
