what's up guys justin here with the sketch essentials dot com back with another sketchup extension tutorial for you so in today's video we're going to talk through some different things we can do in order to simulate curtains or drapes inside of sketchup using the extension cloth works so let's go ahead and just jump into it all right so one thing to note is you are going to need the paid version of clothworks i will link to that in the notes down below but you need that in order to be able to move the pens around so what i wanted to do is just kind of talk through the progression of creating some hanging drapes across an opening inside of sketchup so i'm going to start by just modeling out an opening so we'll just draw a wall right here we'll draw an opening right here and we'll just extrude this to give it a little bit of thickness so just a simple opening and so we'll go ahead and use this for right now and so what i want to do is i want to start by drawing out the size of my drapes all right so i'm going to draw a rectangle just by using the rectangle tool so tap the r key i'm going to tap the left arrow key to lock me to this green axis then i'm just going to draw something like this it just needs to be bigger than our opening for right now i'm going to go ahead and i'm going to take it i'm going to move it off my wall just a little bit using the move tool and now we're ready to go and so i'm going to model this out as a few different progressions so i'm going to take this base piece and i'm just going to kind of copy it a few different times i'm going to go ahead and group this and first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to copy this over here and let's start by just creating a very simple simulation so the way cloth works works is you need to take an object like this plane you need to right click on it with that extension enabled and you need to make it a cloth and so as of right now um it's not really going to be a very good simulation right if we were to click play it's just going to kind of like fall down so we don't necessarily want that i'm going to turn on a hidden geometry right now and i'm actually going to undo this because when we first ran that simulation what this did is this came through here and it uh split this up with a hidden piece of geometry right there and it's going to mess up our subdivision but so the first thing we need to do is we need to pin it right so i'm going to add a pin right here using the add pen tool and click again and add a pin over here so now what we have is a very simple drape right and it's still not going to do what we want it to do so if we click on play it's at least going to hang here and notice how this is a live simulation but notice how it's basically acting like if we hung like a piece of cardboard or something like that which is not what we want because it's just going to be very stiff and it's not going to give us a very good cloth simulation so what we need to do is i'm going to undo out of that we need to add some geometric detail to this object and so we could come through here and do that ourselves but there's some tools built in that we can use that are going to work a little bit better so to start off with our cloth object i'm going to right click go down to clothworks and under my cloth i want to apply a grid and so what a grid is going to do is a grid is going to split this object up and give it more geometric detail so let's start by clicking on apply quadrilateral grid so what that's going to do is that's going to allow us to set this in here with a certain resolution the resolution is telling us how much detail it's going to add well in this situation let's go with something really low resolution so let's type in 200 click on ok so now if we were to click play notice how we get a little bit better result let's go ahead and hide our hidden geometry in here for a second so notice how i can click on these pins and i can move them around when i move this pin around notice how this is starting to kind of like fall and act like a drape right like not a ton but a little bit so it's basically like if we had pinned something up and then move the pins closer together then uh this is gonna simulate basically the way a cloth would work and it's not very good right now we're gonna work on that but we're getting closer so the first thing we need to do is we need to add some more pins and so all we need to do to add pins is i'm actually going to use divide copy mode so i'm just going to erase out this pin then i'm going to use the move tool in copy mode so i'm going to tap the m key single click and tap the control key move my mouse over here and then i'm going to type in divided by 10 and hit the enter key well what that's done is that's created 10 copies of this pin inside of our model right so now if i was to run this simulation like this i could select all of these pins and move them around and notice how this is acting a little bit more like a piece of cloth not great but a little bit and so what we could do to bunch this up is we could click on this red box right here well if i bring that together what that's going to do is that's going to bring all of your cloth together and kind of simulate cloth coming together but you're getting this really weird result right so you're getting all this cloth kind of like running over itself and everything else so we need to fix that and also add some more detail but let's start by changing this so that it collides with itself so we're going to click in our toggle ui settings and within our ui settings we're just going to go into our cloth and we're going to go down and click on the button for self collide and so when we click on the button for self collide what that means is that means that this object is going to collide with itself when we run that simulation so now and let's go ahead and move these off of the wall a little bit so let's play our simulation we'll take all of these and select them and just kind of move them off the wall just a little so that you don't have them like intersecting with that wall we can always move it back later and we're just going to scale this back together again well now you're going to notice here at the top that this cloth is at least trying to self-collide right but we're still getting this really weird result the reason we're getting this weird result is because we have more pins in here than we have detail points so what this is doing is this is pinned this all together but our detail points we don't have enough geometric detail in here for this to act the way that we want it to act so let's abandon this and let's start a new version of this i'm just going to create a copy move this over and we'll go ahead and we'll add some pins to this we'll make this a cloth as well so right click cloth works make cloth we'll add a pin here and then before we do this let's go ahead and let's add some more detail so within cloth works let's go to cloth apply quadrilateral grid for right now let's bump our resolution up to something like 2000. so now if you look at this what this did is this basically what's up guys Justin here with the sketch of essentials compact another sketch up extension tutorial for you so last week I give you an introduction to cloth works the new cloth simulation extension for Sketchup um this week I wanted to give you just kind of more of a step-by-step how it works that video is more of a kind of an overview of the features I wanted to give you more of a step-by-step here's how you use the extension kind of video so before I get started today's video is brought to you by the schedule essentials course the Sketchup essentials course is a course I put together to basically teach Sketchup from start to finish so help you get started fast teach you everything that you need to know so everything from the basic tools and Sketchup to modeling for interior design modeling for layout and also an introduction to photorealistic rendering so if that's something you're interested in you want some more in-depth Sketchup training make sure you check that out at the sketch of essentials comm slash course now let's go ahead and just jump into it so once you've installed cloth works I just wanted to give you kind of a few different steps and things to consider when you're working with it so to start off let's go ahead and just create a couple shapes so just start off I'm going to create a sphere really quick using a two circles here in the follow me tool and I'm just gonna kind of extrude this in a circle just like this and then what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna triple click on that and I'm gonna right-click on it and put all of that geometry in a group and then I'm gonna erase out my original piece right there so then I'll just kind of line this up with my base point so now I have a sphere in here the next thing I'm gonna do is I'm gonna create a rectangle that we're gonna use as a cloth so I'm just gonna draw a flat rectangle right here and I'm gonna use the scale tool to kind of adjust the size and then once I've done that I'm just gonna double click on it I'm gonna right click and I'm gonna make that a group and I'm gonna move it up above my sphere so now I basically have my two objects that I'm gonna use in order to basically drape this along this sphere so in cloth works basically what you have is you have three kinds of objects you have cloth you have colliders and you have pins and so cloth as as you know is what we're simulating so in this case we're gonna make this rectangle into the cloth a Collider is anything that you're cloth collides with so in this case your Collider would be your sphere because you're gonna drape this over your sphere and we'll talk about pens in a minute and so the first thing you need to do is you need to set those objects that are gonna be a part of the simulation within cloth works so to start I'm gonna I'm gonna right click on my sphere group and remember this needs to be a group it can't just be raw geometry and then you're just going to go down to the cloth Works option and you're gonna make this one a Collider so now you can see how if you go down here you right-click on your sphere there's actually an option in here for Collider so you can tell that that has been set within cloth works so the next thing we're gonna do is we're gonna set this rectangle as a cloth so just right click on it again making sure that it's a group and then go down to cloth works and go to make cloth and so now cloth works considers this a Collider and this a piece of fabric or a cloth and so there's another step that we need to follow because right now if you were to simulate this you can see how this basically just kind of sits on top of the sphere is kind of this weird rigid entity and that's because this is basically in here as just four lines in a face so this face hasn't been subdivided there's no geometry in here so there's nothing for this to calculate so basically what we're gonna do is we're gonna subdivide this and so subdividing this means we're gonna take this face and we're going to divide it up into some different points and there's a tool in cloth works that'll let you do this but just as kind of an idea for you if you were to come in here inside this group and you were to split this into four different faces and then you were to run cloth works you can see how you'd get Bend along these different faces so basically fundamentally the way that this works is you're just splitting your face up and then this is actually calculating the way everything would Bend based on that this is actually built very similar to ms physics in that way in the way that it calculates this and this is the the author of this extension is also the author of ms physics all right so what we're gonna do is we're gonna subdivide this into pieces using this subdivision functionality of cloth works so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna right-click on this group and I'm gonna go down to cloth works cloth and I'm gonna use the simple grid option so the simple grid option will allow you to split this up into basically different phases so that it can actually work as cloth so I'm gonna set my padding to two inches in this case and what this is going to do is this is gonna go in here and it's gonna subdivide this face into individual or it's gonna subdivide this face into different pieces of geometry and you can see when I ran that it didn't really look like it did anything initially but if you go up to view hidden geometry you can see that what this did is this subdivided this end it basically a two inch grid and so now it's kind of up above the sphere and it's able to calculate the way that the cloth is going to work and so one thing I'm going to do is I'm gonna move this a little further down and then we're gonna run our first simulation so this has been set as a Collider this has been set as a cloth and it's been subdivided so we're gonna go ahead and click the play button what the play button is gonna do is that's gonna play your simulation and you can see how this actually simulates your cloth falling down around this sphere and depending on the speed of your computer this may go fast it may take a little bit longer it just kind of depends but you can see how this basically simulates the way that the cloth would work however one thing that I really don't like about this initially is you can see how the cloth is all like you've got different overlapping faces and that kind of thing we don't really want that so we need to go in and we need to fix that and the other thing I want to do is I want to apply a texture to this and so one thing that you need to know about when you're working with cloth works is there's actually a button in here for toggle draped so if I was to come in here and click on this cloth I can actually click the button for toggle draped and it'll take this and Oh flatten it back out again so I can toggle it so that it's draped or so that it isn't and so I want to make this so that it doesn't collide with itself the other thing I want to do is I want to apply a material to it because if I was to come in here and I was to apply a material like let's say we were to apply this multicolored striped upholstery mater
