welcome to Altium Designer 17 events PCB course this module will cover adding graphics to the pc boards as we saw in essentials text can be placed using the play string option there are a number of other options in addition to the limited fonts for the stroke option with plain text for example if the TrueType option is selected it opens up a lot of possible modifications including many more fonts the text fonts and size can be modified by clicking on the Associated fields for example by selecting the font pulldown menu we can click and select a new font as well as by clicking on the height value we can change that in addition to fonts there are three other options worth noting we can bold the text we can make it italic and we can also invert the text simply by checking their boxes as you can see here one useful option is the barcode option for automation when checked it opens up the barcode properties section where we can setup the barcode type the render mode text inclusion or not and inverted graphics the use of the barcode facilitates the tracking and inventory of the PC board using top or bottom layer overlays selecting the desired layer and code type either 39 or 128 for the barcode also we can pick the barcode width whether it's minimum single or full let's select the top layer and try the different coding types type 39 initially and then we'll try the barcode with minimum as well as changing the coding type to 128 again there are a number of options here like showing text inverting they provide a lot more flexibility and readability as well for the barcode bins placed once placed the barcodes can be moved or the full bar can be resized by selecting it resize by clicking on the corner and dragging it out it will automatically scale it is possible to add graphics to the PC board from a bitmap image file or a BMP file is accomplished using a script in all TM scripts are very powerful and provide the user with the ability to manipulate the unified design database using defined api's in this case we would be adding something to the PCB while the creation of scripts is beyond the scope of this course there are some that exist and can be used without needing to write them we can install scripts for converting black and white bitmap files into layer graphics using the dxp pulldown menu preferences scripting system and then open up the global projects window here we can install the script for converting image files by clicking on the install button navigating to the PCB logo creator script project and adding that at this point we could run the script using DXP run script like this we will select the run converter script entry running the script opens up a PCB and the scripts PCB logo creator window where we can select the layer for the graphics to be placed on the scale whether to mirror the image or generate the negative of the image let's keep in mind that the bitmap file is a black-and-white image and that white pixels will be displayed in the selected layer notice that the image size is given once the file has been selected and loaded in the conversion will take some time and once complete can be placed exiting out of the script we can now look at the results the image now consists of a series of lines and can be copied moved or the layer change selecting the image we can move it Riis electing it we can use the PCB inspector to change the layer if desired clicking on the image selects a single line this is what the image is actually composed of in order to facilitate moving and resizing the image on the PCB we should create a union of the objects selecting the image and then right click on it and select the union create Union from selected objects this will take all of these components and create a union out of them now with the Union we can move the entire image a lot easier we can also resize it by selecting it right clicking and pick unions then resize now reek licked on that union that we want to change and then grab one of the end points with the left mouse button clicking it and dragging to stretch it out one useful option is to create a local library component from the generated logo let's start by copying it and then we'll open up a new PCB library in the new library paste the logo into the footprint editor and make sure you add a reference of origin using the edit set reference location again you'd want to change the name of the PCB footprint to something that made sense like company logo in addition you'd want to set its type to be a graphical one from the pull down menu now with this logo library we could place the logo on other PCBs to do so we would want to install this library and then from that library we could place it directly onto the PCB there is another method to generate graphics using the DXF file using a DXF file we can import the shape of a logo and use that on our PCB as the basis for creating the graphics we will first want to create a clearance rule for this to prevent unnecessary errors within the DXF import if we have online DRC enabled create a new clearance rule with the first query of in polygon and the second query should be set to is arc or is track and then we would use a minimum clearance of zero we'd also want to ensure that this was the highest priority and make sure that it's enabled for the logo creation process again you would want to disable this after you were finished with your logo creation let's import the DXF file selecting it and then choose the desired layer we want it to be placed on again we want to ensure that this gets placed on a signal layer so let's use the top layer let's place it and now that we have it placed we would want to surround all of the DXF lines with a polygon using the place polygon pore we would want to modify the polygon pore window to not remove Islands and not remove necks the other thing that we would want to tune is the arc approximation we would want to set two point zero one mil to provide a smoother contouring of the arcs now after having placed this we'd want to clean it up let's right-click on the polygon and select polygon actions explode selected polygons to free primitives option having done that now we can click on the original polygon parts that we don't want for the graphic and delete them like so at this point we have the graphics all set but we still have the original arcs and tracks from the DXF import we would need to delete these one way to do this would be to open up the PCB list panel and set its configuration to edit all objects and limit the scope to arcs and tracks select all of the resulting objects with the control a in the list for the graphic and delete them now that you have a graphic logo created you could copy and save this logo to your logo library if you desire the last option for creating and using logos and graphics would be the obvious one create one directly in a footprint library and that's a viable option that I've seen some customers use well this is somewhat limited in terms of the graphics you can use it does work and would be an easy option this completes the instruction on adding graphics welcome to schematic updating as we continue working on our design in this module we will update components using global selection and editing techniques and clean up the schematic using an alignment tool and annotation I had an interesting request once as a consultant from a customer they wanted all of their 10k resistors in the schematics to be changed to another value for sourcing reasons this was easy enough to do in all t of them using a global selection and editing technique that we will illustrate let's change the value of a capacitor throughout our design to begin simply click on the 100 nano farad capacitor now that it's selected we right click and in the pop-up menu select find a similar object this opens up the find similar objects window with a listing showing the selected parts object parameters all of which can be used for a global or local search and selection operation in this case selecting the parts comments pulldown menu we change it to same this allows us to search for any parts with the exact same comment we could just as easily narrow down the search selection criteria by adding more constraints using either same or different again depending on our aim leaving the remaining windows to any basically ignores these for the search before we hit ok and start the search we should explore the find similar objects window a bit looking at the check boxes we have a number of options for our purposes we would like to have all the boxes checked but it's not necessary we want at least the select matching option checked notice that we could simply zoom in to the matching components or if we were looking to create an expression to use elsewhere we could select the create expression box this can be useful when you want to create an expression to use later on in rule generation this window has a number of options including the scope of the search in this case it's set to current document hitting apply performs a find using the current settings in this case limited to the currently viewed document as you can see we have selected 2 capacitors on this page we see this both visually with the highlighted caps as well as the status message on the bottom of the properties panel indicating two objects clicking on the selection opens up the drop-down menu where we can expand our search to include open documents or project documents depending on our intent and needs for selection we could use the various selection options we want to select all of the matching components for this project so that's the option we will pick hitting apply again we see now that we have selected six objects on three documents from the properties panel status now that the scope and selection criteria have been set we turn our attention to what do we do with these selected items clicking ok runs the search and closes the find similar objects window it also opens up the schematic filter panel if it wasn't already open and shows the resulting expression that was used to select the current components looking at the schematic filter panel we see the expression used in the find similar objects query that selected these six components now in the properties panel we can edit the part comment field to read 101 nanofarad instead of a hundred nano farad hidden carriage return updates all of the selected components across the project we can see that this changed multiple components on multiple schematics as indicated by the asterisk on three of the schematic sheets to clear the selection hold the shift key and click on C or right-click in the window and select clear filter looking at each of the schematics we can see the changes hitting ctrl C backs out the change using find similar objects is a powerful way to find select and change components globally in their schematics there are a few more features that can aid in the design capture process the next one being useful with an inherited design especially one that was not captured on grid to realign the schematic objects placing them on a currently set grid first select all of the schematic objects to select all node page either use the rectangle select method or edit select all from the pulldown menu please note that the properties window selection filter has everything enabled otherwise nothing would be selected by the Edit select all action once everything is selected use the Edit align align to grid option the we'll put everything on the current grid setting in some cases you may need to do some cleanup but in the long run is better having everything aligned cleanly both for the look as well as for making connections clicking anywhere in the schematic window will clear the selection using a large grid setting when performing the initial placement is recommended sometimes it's faster just to quickly place components and then clean up their placement later I use Opium's alignment tools to clean up the quickly place components the alignment tools are located under the Edit align sub menu where they can be accessed using the align icon objects must be selected first before performing the alignment operation I use this often times to make the schematics look orderly and neat once I have finished the initial placement and before the wiring begins consider trying a few of the alignment options to get a feel for selecting and aligning objects on your schematics in some cases it can be helpful to document or to draw attention to a particular net to highlight a particular net for example a higher voltage one like 12 volts we use the net color icon and select the color to apply to that net in this example we will select red now we see the active selection cross on the mouse and can assign the red color to any net that we click on apply the net highlighting to the 12 volt net can either escape or right-click to clear the net highlighting mode now all the wires that are connected to 12 volt we see that they have a red highlight on them notice the 12 volt power connectors are not highlighted as they are not wires highlighting can be toggled on and off via the net icon menu here or by hitting the f5 key like this the highlighting can also be removed using the clear net color or clear all net color options from the same that color icon pull down menu again this can be useful to draw attention to particular nets like high voltage or current or to indicate sensitive analog nets when a design is captured the component numbering can get out of order in that instance it can be useful to reanimate the component reference designators in addition some companies have standards for the order and numbering of components on schematics and with all tiem it is possible to reorder the existing components at any point if needed the annotation tool is located under the tools main pulldown window the initial run at annotation should start with the annotate schematic selection this is where the schematic annotation is configured once configured the other options for annotation are able to use such as resetting operations and annotate schematics quietly again these should be only tried after setting up the main annotation settings here we will
