Revit and Abvent Artlantis Rendering Workflow

In May 2009 Jigsaw’s CAD Team was invited by Computers Unlimited to go down to their head office in London to view the workflow compatibility of Artlantis Render with Revit Architecture – as demonstrated by the Abvent team!

Artlantis is the fastest stand-alone rendering application developed especially for architects and designers, and is ideal for quickly and easily creating high resolution 3D renderings, QuickTime VR Panoramas, QuickTime VR Objects, and animations.

Revit plug-in 1.0.3 exports in .atl file format to Artlantis Render 2 and Artlantis Studio 2 (minimum requirements: Revit 2009 and Artlantis Render 2 or Artlantis Studio 2. It now works with Revit 2010 as well).

Note: The .atl files saved in Artlantis 2 will not open with Artlantis 1.x.

The export takes into account:

  • all the 3D Views (various points of view).
  • the geographic location (heliodon/sky).
  • the names of the graphics elements (materials).
  • the colours of the 3D elements.

Artlantis Render showcased some powerful capabilities; real-time preview window, drag and drop material shaders, site insertion tool, realistic environment and sky simulation and integrated post-production. Our favourite – the Postcard tool - allows certain/favourite shaders and materials within a scheme (or office) to be saved as a preview that can be easily dragged, dropped, and applied to current models. Extensive object libraries are available as separate purchases.

When any changes were made in the original Revit model, the export and import functions worked incredibly well at simply replacing the changed components to refresh the render model without having to reapply textures/ materials etc. (and starting all over again!) - so why choose a stand-alone rendering application?

  • Independent interface; live render window that mirrors final render
  • Specialised functions; postcards and sky simulation, intuitive palettes
  • Higher speed rendering; works with 3D skin of model
  • Simplified workflow - gain of time
  • Batch render function - more memory and time savings

Artlantis interfaces directly with ArchiCAD, VectorWorks, SketchUp Pro, and Arc+. With the addition of the DWF, OBJ and FBX import formats and updated DXF, DWG and 3DS plug-ins, Artlantis seamlessly interacts with all the leading CAD software as well.

Free plug-ins for the above software are available from the Artlantis site!
