Recently, I was asked to look into Autodesk's Buzzsaw
for a client. It gave me a good opportunity to see what the
software was all about.
Buzzsaw is an online project management tool that acts as a
central repository for your project data, along with giving you
tools to aid business processes such as approvals and requests for
information.
All of the data is hosted on Autodesk's servers, making the
service nice and easy to set up. There are two parts to Buzzsaw;
the main client software runs only on Windows and gives users the
full functionality of Buzzsaw. The client allows viewing of common
file types such as .DWG within the viewer itself, along with
uploading and downloading of files, commenting on files and
completing the forms associated with business processes (like
approval and requests for information). The client will also allow
administrators to manage the project and assign the relevant
permissions to users.
Documents stored on Buzzsaw can also be accessed using a web
browser, although this functionality is limited to being able to
upload or download documents with none of the access to comments or
business process forms. This can be useful for sending documents to
clients or collaborators - who you may not necessarily want to have
access - through the main client software. You can send them a link
across to this website and they will be able download the files you
specify.
I thought Buzzsaw was a great tool to help
geographically-dispersed workers collaborate on a project. The
tools for drawing approval and other construction focused business
processes really mirror the way that architects and contractors
work.
If you're tired of the confusion and lack of version control
that can be caused by exchanging documents over e-mail, but don't
want the hassle of setting up something like sharepoint, then
Buzzsaw could be for you.
