Bluebeam PDF Revu: The paperless office

The PDF format was introduced to be an electronic replacement for printed documents. Now, that is becoming less of an idea and even closer to a reality. Bluebeam’s PDF Revu creates a PDF document from many popular file formats and, in the case of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office, can create PDFs from within the programs themselves.

PDF Revu includes a suite of very useful tools for marking up and measuring documents of any kind. It can then save those files in the universally readable PDF format for sharing with collaborators. There is also touch screen support, which makes the software more useable in the field and also makes the PDF document feel more like a printed sheet of paper.

PDF Revu is being widely adopted by the construction and education industries in the US because of the amount of time and paper that it can save.

It allows students to annotate lecture notes in PDF form directly on their laptops, and helps teaching staff when it comes to marking by allowing them to place comments directly on digital copies of student’s assignments.

Architects and engineers are also using it where they would normally print off paper copies of plans or construction documents as they can perform markups, measurements or quantify take-offs without having the original CAD files. They can then save all of this electronically for distribution to their collaborators. This approach is faster, uses less paper and has all of the advantages of a digital workflow – being able to undo or save out separate versions of files.

All of the features that come with PDF Revu are contained in the PDF specification. The difference between REVU and other PDF editors is that Revu makes them not only easy to use but makes the process feel more like working with a paper document in the way people are used to.

It is this approach that is helping Bluebeam to be successful as well as saving a few trees in the process.
