Sustainable Design
Sustainable design is certainly one of the hot architectural topics of the year. If it’s not something that your practice is implementing already, we hope that the following pages will help get you on track.
‘Sustainability’ has been expressed as 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own'. It has mainly been a reaction to the global environmental crisis that has been caused by human activity and global expansion; resource depletion, damage to ecosystems and loss of biodiversity. To design sustainably is - in a nutshell - to produce places, products and services in a way that reduces use of non-renewable resources, minimises environmental impact, and relates people to their natural environment.
“Even in tough times, and particularly in tough times, customers will demand more in terms of efficiency, quality and productivity. A built environment that is sustainable – economically, socially and environmentally – is the only one worth investing in now.”
Paul King, Chief Executive, UK Green Building Council
